Biography
Keisuke Tsuchiya is a Japanese composer and sound artist active at the intersection of music and fine art, exploring the sonic and visual aspects of his work. Drawing inspiration from the Anthropocene and New Materialism, he seeks to explore the sonic relationship between humans and their environment through the creation of music, sound sculptures, improvisational performances, and field recordings.
In 2022, Tsuchiya presented 'Give It A Breath,' a sound sculpture performance that showcased the symbiotic relationship between an imaginary organism called 'sonic botanies' and humans. The piece explored Tsuchiya's interests in Post-Anthropocene and More-than-human themes, providing a unique and imaginative sonic interpretation of the relationship between humans and the environment.
In 2019, he started the "Surreal Live Electronics Project," a live performance series that combines sound sculptures and musicians. The sculptures are created using the "assemblage" technique, in which Tsuchiya collects waste and belongings from everyday spaces to create the sculptures. During the performance, these sculptures autonomously improvise with the musicians and react to sounds, creating a unique sonic experience.
Tsuchiya released his debut album "Bricoleur" in 2020, featuring a diverse blend of genres such as neoclassical, ambient, epic, experimental music, concrete music, and Japanoise. The album is a musical interpretation of his "Surreal Live Electronics" project, which utilizes concrete sounds collected from daily spaces to generate electronic sounds, in line with Pierre Schaeffer's concept of sound objects.
Throughout his career, Tsuchiya has collaborated with individuals across various fields, utilizing sound as a medium closely intertwined with other forms of media to create works that transcend boundaries.
In 2023, he collaborated with ceramic artist Nanami Saito and performer Yoshiya Yoshimitsu to present "Where We Sing Along," a sound sculpture installation and live performance work that built upon elements from his previous work "Give It A Breath" in 2022.
Furthermore in 2020 he presented "Gifts from Microplastics," an electro-acoustic and media performance that explores the relationship between humans and the environment, particularly regarding plastic pollution. This rule-based composition involves interactions between microplastics and the performers, providing an opportunity for reflection on this significant social issue in the Anthoropocene era. The work was selected for the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF) in 2020.
